KLM: Pet Policy

What methods of transport does KLM provide for my pet?

  • Travel in the passenger cabin.
  • Checked as baggage in pressurized and temperature controlled area of your aircraft.
  • Shipped as cargo in pressurized and temperature controlled area.

Does my pet qualify for travel in the passenger cabin?

A small cat or dog is allowed in the Economy class cabin of all KLM flights and in the Business class cabin on KLM flights within Europe. The pet must be in a hard shell kennel no higher than 20 cm (7.9 in), allowing the pet to stand up and lie down comfortably. The total weight of the pet and the travel case must be less than 6 kg (13 lbs). The travel bag/kennel must fit under the seat in front of you.

Does my pet qualify for travel as checked baggage?

Your pet must travel in a kennel that complies by IATA rules. The total weight of the kennel and pet must not exceed 165 lbs (75 kg). Snub-nosed animals such as boxers, pugs, bulldogs, Pekinese and Persian cats can have trouble breathing during the flight due to high temperatures and stress. To ensure their well-being, snub-nosed animals may therefore only travel as cargo.

Does my pet qualify to be shipped as cargo?

Your pet must weight more than 165 lbs (75 kg). The kennel must be at least 115 in (292 cm) when you add length, width and height, depending on the aircraft.

What are the fees associated with pet transport?

What are the kennel requirements?

What health documentation is required?

Many Countries require health documents. As it is the passenger's responsibility to be aware of all regulations, you should consult your veterinarian and the local Embassy to where you'll be traveling to ensure that your animal will comply with all requirements.

Are there any other restrictions?

KLM can refuse to transport an animal due to illness, aggressive behavior, poor kenneling, or extreme temperatures at origin, transfer, or destination airports.

Please contact the airline directly for information about traveling with a service animal.
